  • Library 101: Halloween

    Halloween is right around the corner! When we were children this meant that last minute excitement of putting together our Halloween costumes and scoping out the best route to get all the good candy. As adults it has come to mean something different; while some still dress up, and most still pig out on chocolate, adults usually celebrate the scary aspects of the holiday. The end of October is often filled with scary stories, haunted attractions, and horror movie marathons. This is where the library can assist you in putting fright into your nights.   • Library 101: New Graphic Novels

    In recent years characters that originated in comic books have had great success in both feature films and television. This shows no signs of slowing down with plenty of comic related properties on their way in the next year. Many of these characters have a long history, some dating back to as early as the 1930s. A new reader looking for a starting point for these characters can be intimidated by decades of backstory. A few years ago Marvel began a series of Season One graphic novels which offer modern retellings of these superhero origin stories and offer a fresh starting point for new readers.   • Library 101: Autumnal Equinox

    We have been enjoying some glorious weather recently, days warm enough for sandals and shorts and nights cool enough to snuggle under a blanket. But with the arrival of the autumnal equinox all this good weather will slowly fade away. This year the autumnal equinox occurred on September 23rd at 4:31 AM (ET) according to the online Old Farmer’s Almanac. The word “equinox” derives from the Latin, meaning equal night. As the sun crosses the equator day and night are equal for everyone in the world.
